DEEP DIVE
ABT (Always Be Training)

If you want your data career, or any career for that matter to atrophy, and if you want to be left by the wayside, don’t take my advice and be cheap, and don’t even buy at the very least, a $17.99 Udemy or Coursera course. I’ve lost count of how many of these courses I have purchased over the last six years or so. I have seen my professional career flourish since then.

I’m going to tell you a quick story. I like to be honest around here, but I am not going into the full details, as to not identify actual people. I just remember around this time 5 years ago, being invited by the Oracle folks to a one day Data and AI conference at you guessed it - the Westin Harbour Castle. I was told by management that they don’t see the need for me to attend because we don’t use Oracle products (which was not true BTW). I attended any way. My actions caused some contention, but I am not one that likes to be held back by anyone.

I realized at that moment, I had to sharpen my skills because I had not written any meaningful exams in about 11 years at that point. I went on to get multiple certifications from Microsoft, Google, AWS, Oracle, Prefect, etc. Those certifications constituted my second wave of certifications. I had obtained a bunch 20 years prior, at the start of my career.

All of those new certifications have served my well, as I was able to move on from the people that essentially did not want me to expand my horizons and learn new things-even though, back in 2020, I was over 20 years into my career.

All that I am stressing is that this is the time to make a learning and development plan. It does not matter what point you are in your career. And remember to not let anyone hold you back and tell you things like “I do not see this day is relevant to us, at least at the near future as we are not planning to switch to other cloud providers.“.

I believe statements like that are very detrimental to growth and development. With the rise of AI and the related services surrounding it, failing to continuously learn and expand your skill set will make you more likely to become a casualty when your employer decides to go 'in a new direction.' Take heed.
